Our lab session will focus on teaching the Middle Ages of the North Atlantic (MANA)—especially Old English—outside of research institutions, particularly schools that are Majority-Minority Institutions (MMIs), Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), regional schools, or teaching-heavy schools.

Given the traditional assumption of jobs in the study of the MANA and Old English being primarily at Research 1 institutions, we find that discussions of methodological and pedagogical approaches to teaching the material often fail to account for the needs of student populations at MMIs, MSIs, HSIs, and regional schools; the curricular structure of regional or teaching-heavy schools; or the challenges of and demands on faculty carrying a heavy teaching load.
